Earl Nightingale has had a massive impact in the world of success philosophy. He grew up amidst the great depression and spent the rest of his life seeking a better way, the way of success.
What was it that successful people possessed that the average person did not? This was the question that drove young Nightingale to spend most of his younger years in the library reading voraciously. As an adult, Nightingale authored two best selling books and appeared on more than 7,000 radio and television commentaries.
In this article I am going to highlight some of his major contributions to success philosophy and discuss how they relate to our modern day.
Thoughts
Many people are at a point in their lives where they didn’t necessarily plan to be, unexpected life events or lack of focus have allowed time to slip by. The dreams and hopes one had have been slowly drifting away with each passing year and in rush toxic thoughts. One of Nightingale’s central themes is that we are the sum total of our thoughts, that all one has to do is plant a seed in their mind, care for it and work toward their goal. At this point, he says, the thoughts will not only bring you close to your goal but that it will necessarily be attained. Thoughts are things, and given the economic crisis today more and more people’s thoughts are being drawn to the negative things in life making it extremely difficult to ever better their situation.
Clarity
Nightingale says that although the right thoughts are essential to becoming successful one must have clarity of vision before any goals can be achieved. He talks about the importance of writing down specifically what it is you hope to achieve with a given amount of time to achieve it. That putting in writing your goals, provides clarity for you to take action in achieving them. As you begin to allow the clear vision to penetrate your thoughts you will become more confident and able to see yourself carrying it out. Given our present world with all of the opportunities that avail us, it is easy to be caught in one of two areas. First, we find ourselves looking at our immediate needs almost having tunnel vision to make it through each day with little focus on our long term vision. Secondly, it is easy to spin around always looking for something new and jumping from one thing to the next without ever finding what it is that we are truly passionate about. In the throws of opportunity, we find ourselves giving a small amount of effort to many competing things. In order to be successful you must focus on a long term goal with clear vision, not allowing each day to gobble you up.
Burning Desire
Once you have the positive thoughts along with a clear vision of your goal it is important to make sure the passion is behind it. A burning desire mirrors an obsession, everything you do is drawing you closer to that final clearly defined goal of what you would like to accomplish. If all you think about is your bills all you will see is that your bills continue to get deeper. As this happens your burning desire for carrying out your plan begins to diminish. In order to maintain the burning desire one must paint a picture and experience the emotion that comes along with reaching your life goal. Emotion is the key component to maintaining the burning desire necessary to carrying out your plan.
You have heard it before, that each day carries with itself the same number of hours available to everyone. All of the great success stories throughout history where someone amassed great fortunes out of an idea resulted from a clear vision coupled with a burning desire for its actualization. The same twenty four hours are given to everyone and how those hours our spent is up to each individual. It is very easy to come home from a long day and throw on the television for a few hours, but understand that this will be what you continue to do for years to come if something does not change.
