Mandatory U of S training for all employees…

You may have received an email from Fred Deluca recently about the increase in courses being taken on the University of Subway website.  Some Multi Unit Owners have reported significant savings as a result of requiring all new employees to complete the courses prior to being put behind the line.

It’s important to recognize…

that requiring employees to take U of S courses is the direction Subway is headed.  PIC training is just the beginning and the upcoming compliance date is probably why there has been such a spike in the number of courses being taken.  Nothing like a compliance deadline to generate a flurry of activity…  In my business I am heading in the same direction, looking to incorporate U of S courses into our system of training.

Why does it work?  Because anytime you can improve the quality of the training, you are going to see improvements in the quality of employee performance.  However, a word of caution… do not think you can replace the time you, or your manager need to spend with face-to-face training.  Online classes cannot observe or redirect a new employee, two of the four elements of training most frequently overlooked by supervisors.

Do you need  to make U of S courses mandatory to have well trained employees?  No you don’t, but it can’t hurt; plus, it’ll be mandatory soon enough so start working it into your system now.
