As many of you know, in July I made a bet with my employees that they couldn’t finish their certification courses on University of Subway faster than me.  Several of them beat me and by the end of the month we had completed 315 courses.  By August 19th, their chance to win some money ended when I finished my courses.  At that time the team total for completed courses had reached 917.

I continued to offer a pay raise incentive to employees who completed course certifications by August 31st, then allowed whoever was lagging behind the chance to catch up during the month of September.  On October 1st I made it mandatory for all employees to be certified, as a Sandwich Artist, in order to work in our stores (new hires have 6 weeks to complete their certification).  In addition, I now require Closers to be certified as a Senior Sandwich Artist and Openers to be certified as a Shift Mgr.

Here are the results as of today:

Overall:  31 Active Employees / 1187 courses / Ave. 38 courses per employee

Management Team (consisting of 2 owners, 1 regional mgr, & 5 store mgrs.):  425 courses / Ave. 53 courses per team member.

Sandwich Artists:  24 currently / 762 courses / Ave. 32 courses per sandwich artist

Certifications completed by current employees:  Sandwich Artist – 23 / Senior Sandwich Artist – 20 / Shift Mgr.- 12 / Assistant Mgr. – 2 / Store Mgr. – 3 / Multi-unit Mgr. – 1
