Hey, every small business faces challenges. In my small business it seems all I’m doing is facing challenges lately. Right now taxes are a big challenge for small businesses, especially with the State of Michigan eight months behind on processing MBT returns. You know they are just now processing tax returns submitted last February? It makes me wonder what the hell those employees over at the treasury department have been doing all year! It’s hard enough to maintain good cash flow right now without the state hanging on to millions of dollars in tax returns that should have been in the hands of small business owners last August. If that wasn’t bad enough, every business owner in Michigan got a big fat increase in futa because our politicians think it’s okay to pass on the cost for extending unemployment benefits to the business community.
In addition to the extra tax challenges associated with owning a business in Michigan, I’ve had to suspend a recent campaign aimed at helping to promote Michigan small businesses. Being gone three to four days a week was taking a tremendous toll on my family. There was no question that stopping was the best thing for my family, but nonetheless it was a big disappointment to fall short of my goal. So, the challenge there is to keep my spirits up and stay motivated, while I adjust the goal and rework my plan to achieve it.
At the same time, I have the challenge of buying a business. A local fitness center was getting ready to close it’s doors, so instead of seeing our community suffer the loss of another business, I decided to buy it. Why not? I’ve always thought it would be cool to own a gym… Already I’ve negotiated the price, applied for incorporation, and have an attorney reviewing the purchase agreement. Oh, there are so many details to oversee. I expect to close in mid February and then I’ll face the challenge of increasing the membership and getting the business profitable.
And, in my business coaching I’m facing the challenge to reach new clients who seek relevant information and real answers in this critical economic time. It’s no cake walk…
Yes, small businesses face challenges… but history doesn’t judge us by the challenges we face; it judges us by how we respond.
